XL PRO combines a nutritious mixture of premium grade marine proteins and all-natural color enhancers designed to promote maximum growth and color in robust fish such as frontosas, Haplochromines, and Central American cichlids. To ensure vibrant and clean color— especially blue, this formula depends strictly on the powerful and reliable effects of Antarctic krill and a potent blend of spirulina. XL PRO also contains montmorillonite clay to promote efficient digestion

Like all our foods, XL PRO includes calcium montmorillonite clay. This clever addition recreates the natural ingestion of mineral particles while binding and neutralizing harmful metabolic toxins. Packed with raw, full-effect vitamins, digestive enzymes, and garlic, we ensure your fish stay healthy and free from internal parasites.

Additionally, the clay’s cleansing action helps continually rejuvenate the digestive tract, guaranteeing optimal digestion rates and nutrient assimilation. With just two sources of starch (flour for binding and vitamin E-packed wheat germ),

The recipe’s ingredients include white fish meal, wheat germ, whole wheat flour, krill, pea protein, brewer’s yeast, calcium montmorillonite clay, spirulina, assorted vitamins and minerals, garlic, protease, and natural gum.

Small, frequent meals are more beneficial than one large meal. Two or three feedings daily are ideal. All Dainichi foods contain minimal starch levels to prevent excessive swelling in the digestive tract and eliminate any chances of causing bloating and inflamation. A bonus: the reduced waste production, helps keep your tank’s dissolved organic matter levels low, aiding in reducing algal blooms.

This is a juvenile frontosa (your run-of-the-mill Burundi variety here) spawned in our research tanks. The coloration is clean with the white, black and very nice blue colors displayed. A this point, the food used consisted of a mix of mostly XL PRO and occasional supplementation with some COLOR SUPREME, as that formula has the special nutritional coating.

These frontosas were used as test subjects in the COLOR FX food trials. Although that formula has the benefit of two different spirulina varieties in the formulation, it does contain a high amount of astaxanthin and carotenoids whose primary function is to bring out and accentuate red and orange colors. Although the visual beauty of given fish is highly jubjective, our opinion here at Dainichi, is that this look is not as pleasing as a predominantly blue one of fish NOT fed astaxanthin/carotenoid laden food.

Another example of astaxanthin/carotenoid effect on some adult frontosas. Nice fish, but could be more blue in color. There is absolutely no call for turning any part of such a fish some reddish hue. Feeding with astaxantin containing foods over a prolonged time span will result in such frontosas turning a dreadful muddy and brown color far, far removed from the potential or former beauty. Here, we noted the beginning of the change around the upper back and head and stopped the food trial right away; why ruin such nice fish?

Like this, perhaps? Same fish, but at this stage it has not seen astaxanthin containing food in it’s entire life. The over-all hue is that of beautiful blue. There is not even a hint of any muddy or brownish tones. Our advice is this: do not feed these fish ANY foods containing astaxanhin and/or carotenoid. These are slow-growing, majestic fish. The blue look is so much more rewarding than looking at some dull brown blots with fins swimming around an aquarium. Our sincere recommendation is to feed with XL PRO and treat with COLOR SUPREME once in a while.

Here is an example of Mpimbwe variety frontosa from the FX trial. With no yellow hues, the effects of these carotenoin color compounds is notably different. The reason for this is the following. Whereas the blue frontosa varieties such as Mpimbwe do not have any notable areas of the body and fins with yellow hues, varieties such as Kala and Burundi do. What happens then, is that the carotenoids are deposited into those yellow chromatophores and try to turn them an orange or red hue. Unfortunately, this does not happen due to the gray undertones in the skin of the fish. And, as anyone who ever tried mixing red paint with equal amount of gray can attest to, the result is, lets just say…unpleasing. For this reason, our recommendation on feeding red color enhancing foods to all frontosa varieties is: “JUST SAY NO!”
